SUZI – rescued 2000
Suzi was 8 months old when we rescued her from a backyard breeder. She was a very scared little girl who hadn’t had any socialization in her young life. She was ready to become a mommy while herself still a pup. Suzi gave birth to 3 healthy puppies when she was 9 months old. A couple of days after she had given birth, I had gotten an e-mail that someone was desperately looking for a new ‘mother’ dog to nurse her two newborn yorkie terrier pups whose mother had just died. I volunteered Suzi and she accepted those 2 new kids like they were her own. When Suzi’s pups were just 3 days old, she developed a uterine infection and had to have an emergency hysterectomy. We worried about how she would be able to handle her 3 kids and the 2 “adopted” kids after surgery. But, she took care of those babies as soon as her eyes opened and nursed them like she wasn’t even in any pain. Unfortunately, the yorkie puppies were not strong enough to survive but her own 3 pups grew up to be beautiful pups indeed. Suzi now known as “Dickens” lives in a loving “forever” home in Wisconsin with her mom Sue and several fur-siblings. All of Suzi’s 3 pups were adopted out as well to loving families. |
EVE - rescued 2002
In May of 2002 we rescued Eve from a backyard breeder in Maine. In this man's hands Eve was forced to live locked in a trailer in her own waste with who knows how many other dogs.
When I picked her up she was in horrific condition. Her fur was matted, stained yellow and her feet/nails were black! She was skittish and terribly shy and would cringe when I touched her. She had a hard time walking because some of her nails had grown so long they were almost imbedded into the pads of her paws. She smelled bad...I could tell she had infections. Judging from her appearance, the way she moved and the sadness in her eyes I thought she must be at least 8-years-old.
It was a holiday weekend when I picked her up. The first two days in my care she spent sitting in a corner in my home not interested in anything...I spent many hours those first two days trying to coax her out of the corner. Eventually I won. She wouldn't let me really pet her or show her much affection. But she sat intently listening as I talked to her.
Her first visit to the vet she was totally shaved and we learned she had decodermic mange so bad her skin was fire engine red everywhere and she had open sores on parts of her skin from going untreated for so long. Coupled with eye infections, ear infections and an upper respiratory infection; two open wounds on her face which my vet said were dog bites. My vets exact words were, "I've never seen such a little dog with so many different health problems." He doubted she'd ever seen a vet in spite of the "breeder" telling us she had been wormed and had her rabies vaccine. He said she is about 3 years old.
After many, many visits to the vet, and many hours spent with me she's done a 360-degree turnaround. She may always carry emotional scars from her first 3-years of life. She still doesn't like men, large dogs, loud noises or unfamiliar people, and can bite when picked up. But this once shy, scared little girl is turning into a loving playful puppy who is eager and quick to learn. Although it takes a lot of patience and love to win her trust, what a prize it is when you do.

Oliver - rescued 2001
Little Oliver (sable/white) was rescued from a puppy mill breeder in June? , 2001 when he was 10 months old. He came to Lucky Chin with his mother, father, sister and brother. Lucky Chin provided veterinary services to Oliver and his family of Chins in Houston, Texas. Once we adopted him in December of 2001, we realized we had many challenges ahead of us. He had been existing in a cage for his puppy life and we had a hard time training him to go potty outside. He was also very timid and shy around new people. If visitors would come to the house, he would hide and shake until they left. He also had some aggressive tendencies due to his lack of trust for new people. Fortunately with the guidance and positive interaction with his 8 year old new sister, our family, and lots of patience from everyone, he began to see life in a positive way. He is featured in the photo with our first rescued Japanese Chin, Pooter. He would watch Pooter as she interacted with visitors and he learned that he could trust people again. She has been a great model for him and he loves her! He also had some health issues but we stayed in contact with our veterinarian who saw him regularly. He was terrified of the veterinarian when we would visit and she was very patient with him as he growled and tried to bite. This past year has been very challenging and we have had to work through many issues with Oliver. We've also had to realize that it is not always easy raising a chin who has had such a hard life from the beginning. With patience, love and consistency, our family has made a commitment to give Oliver the best care and help through his new life with us FOREVER! He adds so much life to our home and everyday we see this little boy grow, trust and enjoy life...He is so happy and lively now!
